History of Palm Beach: Railways, Resorts, and a Florida Town

Palm Beach’s development depended on hotels, railways, land investment, and municipal organization. Its polished resort identity was built through substantial changes to the island landscape.

Palm Beach Before the Resort Boom

The history of Palm Beach includes a subtropical landscape reshaped by transport, resort development, and municipal government. The town’s official history dates the arrival of its first permanent pioneer settlers to 1872. That is a particular settlement chronology, not evidence that the wider region lacked earlier Indigenous history. Early residents cleared land, farmed, and developed local businesses. 1

According to settler accounts, the 1878 wreck of the Providencia supplied coconuts that residents planted. The town connects this episode to its name and its palm landscape. The qualification matters: the account is transmitted through local historical memory, not a complete explanation of every palm on the island. 1

Hotels and Flagler’s investment

Tourism developed before the largest resort projects, with the Coconut Grove House opening in 1880. Henry Flagler’s Royal Poinciana Hotel followed in 1894. His railway investment transformed access and linked the destination to a much larger travel network. 12

The Palm Beach Inn, later called The Breakers, added an oceanfront attraction. The hotels did not simply occupy a ready-made paradise: construction, transport, landscaping, and service labor made the resort experience possible. The island’s later image conceals much of that work. 12

Fire, rebuilding, and permanence

The Breakers suffered major fires in 1903 and 1925, followed by rebuilding. The present landmark therefore represents more than the survival of one original hotel. Each reconstruction responded to commercial expectations and the desire to preserve a recognizable destination. 12

This distinction is common in resort history. A name and institutional identity can continue while the actual building changes substantially. Dating a business and dating its present architecture are different historical tasks. 2

A town with government and rules

Palm Beach incorporated on April 17, 1911. The local account records thirty-five men participating in the incorporation meeting, reflecting the restricted political participation of the period. Resort development and civic organization were intertwined, but not everyone enjoyed an equal voice. 1

Later planning and preservation helped maintain a distinctive built environment. A full account must also look beyond wealthy visitors to the workers and neighboring communities that supported the town. Palm Beach’s history concerns the making and management of an exclusive destination, as well as its famous hotels. 12
